FRINGE REVIEW: The Black Widow Gun Club a wry, tightly written whodunit

The Black Widow Gun Club

Stage 4, Walterdale Theatre, 10322 83 Ave

5 stars out of 5

Trevor Schmidt’s latest (well, one of three of his latest Fringe shows) is about as note-perfect as you can get.

It’s a funny, tightly written whodunit that is well constructed and excellently staged.

We have the three titular widows, all former Mrs. Hugh Carruthers, in for questioning after Hugh’s untimely passing. They all have the same gun, and the same apparent ill-will toward poor Hugh.

Through interconnected monologues, prim-and-proper Diandra Fairfax (Kristin Johnson), sweet Josie (Michelle Todd) and seductive Oona (Cheryl Jameson) detail their courtship and marriage troubles to Hugh and their dealings with one another as the dead husband made his way from marriage to marriage.

The trio of leads are so well-matched that it never feels like one actor’s show over another’s, and they handle Schmidt’s rapid-fire, bygone-era dialogue effortlessly.

The show is bolstered by production and costume design that makes it feel as though you’re watching a black-and-white movie come to life.

At a breezy 50 minutes, it’s a clear Fringe winner.
